On December 15, 2004, two groups of survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki went to the Grand Opening of the new Smithsonian Museum annex near Dulles Airport, where the Enola Gay was put on display as a "technological advance," without any mention of the 140,000-plus people who died when a single atomic bomb was dropped on August 6, 1945. These survivors had carried a petition to the Smithsonian requesting that it include the death total on the plaque which describes the plane.
