>From a commentary Gandhi wrote in his newspaper, Harijan, on June 30, 1947, referring to the American atomic bombing of Japan 22 months earlier: "So far as I can see, the atomic bomb has decimated the finest feelings that have sustained mankind for ages," Gandhi wrote. "There used to be the so-called laws of war which made war tolerable, but now we know the naked truth, that war knows no law, except that of might. The atom bomb brought an empty victory to the allied armies, but it resulted for the time being in destroying the soul of Japan." Another quote: "If India takes up the doctrine of the sword, she may gain momentary victory," Gandhi wrote in Young India, as his newspaper was then called, on Aug. 11, 1920. "Then India will cease to be the pride of my heart." He added, still speaking of India, "I believe absolutely that she has a mission for all the world." ********************************************************************************* Winston Weeks Education Director Downwinders,Inc. http://www.downwinders.org E-Mail: wweeks@aros.net 10:35 AM Tuesday, May 26, 1998
