Sikhs staged a rally yesterday in Lafayette Park, marking the Indian
"Festival of Light" and the second anniversary of Indian Prime Minister Indira
Gandhi's assassination.
About 40 Sikhs gathered to protest alleged Indian government involvement
in the deaths of 20,000 Sikhs in the days following Gandhi's death.
Gandhi was killed by two of her Sikh security men in apparent retaliation
for her decision to send troops into the Sikhs' holiest shrine, the Golden
Temple of Amritsar, to flush out extremists using it as a base for terrorist
attacks, according to authorities.
A Sikh spokesman said Sikhs do not condone terrorism and that it has not
been proved that Sikhs killed Gandhi.
