A 24-year-old man smashed a bottle of red liquid on a column at the White
House entrance yesterday, as he and four others were arrested during a protest
against Reagan administration policies.
The man had just completed a tour of the White House with a group when he
was arrested, Secret Service spokesman William Corbett said.
"As he exited he apparently took out a bottle of red liquid and smashed it
against a pillar," Corbett said.
The man, who had no identification, told police he was Phillip Joseph, 24,
from the Washington area. He was charged with malicious destruction, a
misdemeanor.
Four other protesters -- members of a group calling itself the Atlantic
Life Community -- were arrested outside the White House for disobeying a
federal code by bringing a stationary sign within 10 feet of the White House
fence, a U.S. Park Police spokeswoman said. They were fined $50 each and
released.
About 60 people participated in the protest denouncing the arms-to-Iran
scandal, the April 14 U.S. bombing of Libya and the continuation of arms
production by the United States.
