Portrait of the Renfrew Family
Original caption: A Roxbury couple who refused to send their nine year old son to fourth grade classes because he doesn't find it "intellectually stimulating," suggested that school officials talk it over with their son, in German, Chinese or Sanskrit. The challenge was made by Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Renfrew who are shown with son Shanti, 9. Mr. Renfrew, a ceramics engineer converted to Buddhism, and his wife, Sita, 46, of Ceylon, appeared in court this week to appeal a $40.00 fine leveled against them for keeping their son out of school. The court suggested that school authorities get together with the Renfrews and try to work out a compromise within a week.
