thought this might be of interest...... --------------------- Forwarded message: Subj: Fwd: News Iteam That May Be Of Interest Date: 97-05-09 02:39:20 EDT From: DONNALA15 To: DANL176 Hi all...thought you might be interested in this...pretty sad isn't it? Close to me in New York State we have something bad happening also. The governor...in his wisdom...is coming down hard on all the Native people who are selling cigarettes and gasoline to "non-Indians". The state wants those tax dollars. The Seneca nation is fighting to keep this from happening and insists the state honor their treaties as a soverign nation. The state is letting just enough gas trucks onto the reservation so the Indians can have gas, but none extra for the "non-Indians". Meanwhile there are hundreds of Indians being put out of work. No cigarettes and gasoline to sell...no "non-Indians" coming to buy them. The Indians are fighting back by burning massive stacks of tires on the NYS Thruway and 2 other main highways that run through the Rez. The Troopers are out in full force...wasting even MORE tax money. Think about this one...these poor people will go on welfare, or unemployment...who pays this? THe state of course...meaning US. Because they cannot leave the Indians alone to sell whatever they can to make a decent living, but insist on those tax dollars an entire people are fighting to save their jobs. Scary shit huh? Many of us who live nearby have signed petitions in favor of the Indians. I doubt if Governor Patacki gives a shit!!! Just thought I'd pass this along. It's more involved than this..but it looks like the Indians are gonna lose this one too. Makes you wonder if there is any honor left doesn't it? Sending some Light to this situation is something we can all do to help. WE know it works...let's give it a shot! Thanks for listening! :) Love & Light Donna --------------------- Forwarded message: From: ejlight@earthlink.net (E. J.) The deadline has passed and the evictions have begun. Most of the Traditionals are elders and know no other way to live except here on their land, as their ancestors did. THEY WILL NOT LEAVE and WE ARE HERE TO HELP THEM STAY ON THEIR LAND. HISTORY: In 1949 Kerr McGee Corp. discovered uranium deposits in the area. In 1951, McGee began mining and milling operations as well. PEABODY WESTERN COAL CO. leased huge tracts of land for massive strip-mining. One of Peabody's lawyers was also a lawyer for the "puppet" Hopi tribal council, a clear conflict of interest. Public law 93-531 passed in 1974 requires partition of 3,000 sq miles of land and the removal of more than ten thousand Navajo people. The primary site for relocation, called the "new lands", near Sanders, Arizona, is down stream from the nation's largest known uranium spill. The spill occurred when a dam containing more than a hundred million gallons of radioactive water burst in July 1979. This area is still designated the primary site for relocation. 350 million of your tax dollars have gone so far to fund the dreams of politicians and energy corporations eager to rape the riches of northern Arizona. Only the presence of the Dineh on the Hopi Partitioned Land (HPL) is keeping the U.S. government from making good on it's promise to turn four corners into a "national sacrifice area". There is a dispute between the Hopi and Navajo tribal councils whose income is totally dependent upon mineral leases and U.S. aid. The big Mountain Dineh people (SDN) do not recognize the authority of these councils. This is a complicated issue, but it boils down to this: forcibly removing people from their ancestral sacred land in order to coal and uranium mine, estimated to be worth billions of dollars. What we have here is a powerful mining company, Peabody Western Coal Co. in collusion with the federal government, the Navajo and Hopi tribal councils, choosing profits over the genocide of a people. MOST RECENTLY: Starting at the beginning of May and continuing throughout this project, caravans of people will be headed to big mountain for peaceful demonstration and the formation of a human shield. We are looking for people and vehicles to travel as well as financial support for both the caravan's and the Dineh traditionals. The caravan's will be traveling for both short term (one week) and long term expeditions. Call for next caravan or to donate your support dollars. You must first notify the SDN before you come to Big Mountain. You can do this through SOL Communications, sol@westworld.com This situation requires your immediate support. Please don't let history repeat itself. ------------------------- end quote ---------------------------------------------------------------- ___ {o o} ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^oo0^(_)^0oo^^^^^^^^^^^^ "And where are the people, O Lord?"
