Mailinglist Indigenous Peoples vs. Uranium Mining ------------------------------------------------- I have recently learned that Seattle Washington is considering a bid for a future World's Fair. Presently the Governor of the State of Washington is supporting a license issued by his predecessor for a radioactive waste dump to be issued next to the Spokane Indian Reservation. The site is a old urnaium mill owned by Newmont Mining Corp. The site has been a problem for many years. It has and continues to contaminate water within the Spokane Indian Reservation with radioactive and other materials of a toxic nature. Our organization (Dawn Watch) and the Spokane Tribe have tried to get the governor to become involved and speak out on this wrong. Washington State has many tribes and part of it's tourist attraction is our Indian cultures. I am considering asking you my comrades in this struggle to help get the word out in Europe and Asia that Washington is following racist economics. Everyone knows that you don't dump radioactive waste on Indigenous Peoples. What people should know is that the state of Washington does condone and support by licensing such a action. So please spread the word to those who are considering visiting this state and perhaps send a e-mail message to Governor Locke at : governor.locke@governor.wa.gov In the past few weeks several hundred signatures have been generated on a open letter and nearly 300 individual letter from people who condemn this states action. People from more than 40 differemt Tribes and Bands are represented in the individual letters. Two weeks ago we asked that the Governor accept the letters from a Spokane youngster. The governor has not responded. Owen Berio /Dawn Watch
