William Jefferson Clinton
Commander in Chief
The White House
Washington, DC

April 6, 1999

Mr. President

In protest over your administration's illegal aggression against the sovereign state of Yugoslavia and the Serbian people I hereby return Bronze Star awarded to me by one of your predecessors in office for services I voluntarily rendered to this beloved Republic.

Arrogantly attacking the country of my birth, America's ally in both world wars, this administration has transgressed against international laws and common decency. Your foreign affairs and national security team inept, ignorant, and morally deficient, is proving tragically worthy of your leadership. Blinded by might, justifiably worried about your "legacy," and steeped in historic amnesia, your team is squandering America's prestige and undermining the greatest defensive alliance in world's history over the issues that have no bearing to our national interests.

On this day 58 years ago Belgrade was pulverized by Nazi bombs. On the threshold of the new century you are completing the job started by another proponent of a new order. On your recent trip to Central America you apologized for the many mistakes of your predecessors in that part of the world. Some day one of your successors may come to Belgrade to do the same for attack against the Serbs.

It is in sorrow, rather than anger, that I feel a genuine "moral imperative" to return this award. I have to give it to the man who refused to join us in another struggle, which - for all its flaws - was eminently more understandable compared to the reckless adventure you are currently pursuing. Life is full of ironies, but unless we do what is right it would not be worth living.

Regretfully,

Milan Nedic
