White House Targeted by Protesters

WASHINGTON (AP) -- About three dozen peace activists gathered along Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House protested Tuesday against the U.S. military intervention in Yugoslavia.

A group of student tourists watched curiously as demonstrators carried signs reading ``Violence Begets Violence'' and ``Killing to Stop Killing is Bad Policy.''

The demonstration was organized by the Washington Peace Center. Participant David Zirin said NATO involvement in Kosovo has only served to exacerbate the problems there.

``NATO bombing is actually making the ethnic cleansing worse,'' said David Zirin, a public schoolteacher in the nation's capital. He said reports of the U.S bombing campaign ``are not saying what the humanitarian toll is.''

Sitting by a fence along the White House lawn, Milanka Bangich held a sign reading ``My family is in a bomb shelter now. Where is yours?''

A Serb who came to the United States in 1968 and now lives in Arlington, Va., Bangich said her brothers and sisters and their children live two hours outside Kosovo.

``Who knows if they are alive today?'' Bangich said. ``I cannot do anything except be outside screaming.''
