Dragonfly wanted to know why Thomas doesn't hate the General.
Thomas worships the Spirit of Love. Hate isn't Love.
Still Thomas does perceive two major flaws in Stephen, which combine to render him intolerable.
First, Thomas dislikes dishonesty, but, because he clings stubbornly to the belief that people are basically good, Thomas likes to think that Stephen might someday decide to be honest; if that happened Thomas wouldn't dislike being around Stephen nearly as much as he presently does.
Thomas also believes that what goes around comes around, therefore, in the final scene, Thomas believes, Stephen's dishonesty is going to come down on Stephen.
Logically, pity would seem more appropriate than hatred.
