LEGAL STRATEGIZER SPEAKS WITH FORKED TONGUE

The General visited D.C. a couple of times. The first time he was downright friendly. At that time Thomas had no office, and was operating solely out of Lafayette Park. Stephen took Thomas to dinner, and talked about setting him up in an office. Thomas explained that he wasn't ready for such a complicating change in his operation. The second time Stephen dropped by Thomas had an office and was able to share copies of a couple Forest Service Rainbow reports with Stephen from the office files.

Thomas recalls two phone calls from Stephen. As best Thomas can remember, in the first call, fall or winter, 1992, Stephen mentioned having heard Thomas wrote a manuscript entitled "Life, Liberty and the Hot Pursuit." Stephen expressed interest in reading it. Thomas sent him a copy.

The second call came around February or March, 1993. Stephen said he thought Thomas' manuscript was very interesting, and offered to help publish it. Thomas explained that he wanted to distribute the book for free, and would appreciate any assistance as long as Stephen didn't mind that there wouldn't be any money in it.

Never once did Stephen tell Thomas to his face, or even over the telephone, that he suspected Proposition One or Thomas to be "politically correct," "communist," "New Age," "neo-fascist," or in any other way "unRainbow," thus the tales Stephen was telling behind Thomas' back seemed flat unfriendly.".
