As a skeptic, Thomas wonders whether there is anything he knows outside his own mind. However, knowing his own mind, Thomas is certain of his own motive for getting involved with the MFPE:

Knowing his mind, and stuck with his experience, Thomas was disconcerted by the harsh judgment of his motives. His disconcertion wasn't personal, it came from frustration with humanity's inability to colaborate in harmonious concert.
