Proposition One Web-Domain

Web-Site Projects

The Proposition One Web Project is a combination of several different Web Sites whose focus is to facilitate information and communication concerning the eliminiation of nuclear weapons, economic conversion and the preservation of free expression, without which the promotion of alternatives would not be possible. The project currently contains over 1100 pages and is divided into 8 separate web sites.

In January, 1996, the Proposition One Committee established the Non-Profit Internet Domain "prop1.org." The new Web-domain address begins at http://prop1.org, and gives us the ability to host sub-domain pages over the internet. Our first attempt includes web-sites for: Abolition 2000, World Court Project, Nuclear Abolition Summit and other Anti-Nuclear and First Amendment Rights web sites.

Initial web page construction began over a year ago. We actually joined the World Wide Web in June, 1995, but not until February, 1996 did we register our web-domain and its associated web-sites with over 10 separate search engines. This will dramatically increase our accessIbility to the web community who search on anti-nuclear and first amendment keywords.

Material concerning Proposition One, a history of the successful campaign, do-it-yourself advice, and information about the anti-nuclear movement is used as a platform upon which current information and discussions may be built. We began linking this information to related projects immediately after the World Court Project. For example, the Nuclear Abolition Summit web-site was set up for up-to-the-minute information concerning the Nevada Summit, held April 1-4, through electronic communication between the Shundahai Network in Nevada and the Proposition One office in Washington, D.C

An important arm of our internet plan involves the Networking Project. In addition to on- going World Court Project and Abolition 2000 update pages, we have been incorporating project and resource information -- including a Calendar and Current Events, Anti-Nuclear Web Links, the Deadly Radiation Hazards database -- from like-minded organizations, and linking the various organizations with e-mail dialogue boxes and websites.

Our goal in structuring a network to collect and disseminate this material is to construct a Forum which will be available for use by physically separate organizations in which to formulate, agree on and implement more coordinated global strategies for nuclear disarmament and economic conversion.

Ultimately, we hope, the forum concept will also be used in a wider legal sense. We believe the issues of human rights and nuclear weapons are closely linked. The legal section of our web page begins with the regulatory process and legal battles that have made it increasingly difficult to express alternative opinions in public places by tracing the 15-year anti-nuclear vigils started by William Thomas and Concepcion Picciotto across from the White House in Washington, D.C. The legal process which originated at the vigil has served as legal precedent which affects people all across the United States, and the Web Project is beginning to make those links.
